How to switch your dog to Deshed Fresh
By Dave
Some dogs can try a new food and carry on like nothing happened. Others make it very clear you moved too fast. When someone asks me how to start Deshed Fresh, I tell them to take it slowly.
Begin with a small amount mixed into their usual meal. Over about 7 to 10 days, gradually add more Deshed Fresh and less of the old food. That’s a guide, not a deadline. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, give them longer.
Watch their appetite, poo and how they seem in themselves. If their stools go loose, don’t keep increasing the new food. Give them more time at the current mix. If they’re repeatedly vomiting, have significant diarrhoea or seem unwell, speak to your vet.
One thing that catches people out is portion size. Don’t assume that 200 g of their old food should become 200 g of Deshed Fresh. Different foods provide different amounts of energy. Our feeding calculator gives you a starting daily amount for a full Deshed Fresh diet. During the changeover, you’re working towards that amount while reducing their old food.
I’d stick with one recipe during the switch so you can see how your dog goes with it. Once they’re settled, you can think about variety.
If your dog is on a prescription diet or has a health condition such as pancreatitis, check with your vet before changing their food. Those dogs need advice that fits their situation.
There’s no prize for switching in a hurry. Take your time, keep meals measured, and watch the dog in front of you. If you’re unsure where to start, send me a message.
